Rudbeckia hirta 'Marmalade'

Rudbeckia is a type of coneflower, similar to echinacea, and makes an incredible cut flower, fresh or dried. These are a gorgeous wildflower, also known as Black Eyed Susans, and are a special flower to me because they remind me of my childhood in the states. My mom grew these in our garden, as they are a popular native flower in North America.

They create striking clumps of warm, bright, marmalade-coloured blooms throughout the warmer months and return year after year. Give these perennials a little bit of time to get started, but the wait is certainly worth it. A tough flower well-suited for Australia, they are not phased by summer dry spells or sweltering days.

Rudbeckias are a perfect cutting flower, fresh or dried. For drying, try popping some stems through a raised garden sieve, or similar structure, to allow the petals dry flat, or place stems in a wide mouth vase without water and let them dry with the petals dipping down. For best results, cut when the stems are stiff, so that they hold up when dried.
